What is a Doula?

doula (/ˈduːlə/) is a trained companion who is not a healthcare professional and who supports another individual (the doula's client) through a significant health-related experience, such as childbirth, miscarriage, induced abortion or stillbirth, or non-reproductive experiences such as dying.

Welcome to Village Witch Doula! I'm Melina, currently residing in Nunavut, but am originally from Ontario. I am a graduate of the Duel Stream (labour & birth, postpartum care) through Doula Canada, and have completed Chestfeeding Support. I worked in the sexual health field for nearly 4 years before starting my doula journey; that knowledge still stays with me!

"It was witches who developed an extensive understanding of bones and muscles, herbs and drugs, while physicians still deriving their prognoses from astrology and alchemists were trying to turn lead into gold. So great was the witches' knowledge that in 1527, Paracelsus, considered the "Father of Modern Medicine", burned his text on pharmaceuticals, confessing that he "had learned from the Sorceress all he knew." - Witches, Midwives, and Nurses: A History of Women Healers, 1973
